Hypoxia
Hypoxia is a state in which body tissues receive less oxygen than they need for normal function.
Hypoxia refers to a shortfall of oxygen reaching the body's tissues relative to their needs. It is the opposite of hyperoxia and can occur at high altitude or in low-oxygen environments. Understanding hypoxia provides context for why hyperbaric environments focus on increasing the availability of oxygen through pressure and enrichment.
This entry is part of the OxyEdge Hyperbaric Glossary, a plain-language reference covering the pressure, oxygen-delivery, and chamber-construction terms you will encounter when researching mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Understanding this vocabulary makes it easier to compare chamber specifications, evaluate safety features, and ask the right questions before purchasing a chamber for a clinic, wellness center, or home.
